A Study on Serum Ferritin Level in Gynecologic Oncologic Patients

Abstract
|
|
|
With the development of sensitive techniques for serum ferritin estimation, it has become apparent that considerable higher level of ferritin circulates in the blood of malignant patients.
This study was undertaken to measure serial ferritin levels in 5 patients with cervical cancer and 4 patients with ovarian cancer, ana to evaluate whether the ferritin may be a valuable tumor marker in cervical ana ovarian cancer.
The results obtained were as follows :
1. Serum ferritin levels were higher in cervical and ovarian cancer patients than in control however there was no difference between cervical cancer patients and ovarian cancer patients.
2. Serum ferritin levels were significantly higher in patients with advanced (stage Ⅲ) cancer than in patients with stage Ⅰ or Ⅱ cancer.
